Donald Huffman Obituary

Donald R. Huffman

Donald R. "Don" Huffman, 97, of Fostoria, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 1, 2024, at Independence House, Fostoria.

He was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Girton, to Edwin E. and Sylvia E. (Blessing) Huffman. Don married Mary Petrie on Dec. 19, 1953, in Angola, Indiana, and she preceded him in passing Nov. 20, 2001.

Don was also preceded in death by their son, Robert T. Huffman, on May 5, 2017; parents; and siblings, Eunice M. Huffman, Paul Edgar Huffman, Margaret A. Ollom, Mary L. Clagg, and Helen E. Hunt.

He is survived by his nephews, James Huffman and Harold Huffman of Fostoria, and Charles Huffman of Erie, Pennsylvania; niece, Donna Murlin (Clagg) of Fostoria; and other nieces and nephews, Patti Beers (Ollom), Jim Ollom, Don Ollom, Ron Ollom, all of Fremont.

Don proudly served his country in U.S. Army during World War II with the 34th Infantry Regiment. Corporal Huffman was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Occupation Medal before his honorable discharge in 1946.

Don returned to Fostoria in 1946 to begin work at Fostoria Industries as a Laborer for 30 years. As a lifelong active person, he enjoyed walking his many Airedales and hunting Ohio's woodlands. Together, Don and Mary started Fostoria's first Adopt-A-Pet program, using WFOB, the Review Times, and flyers to find homes for nearly 6,000 pets. Additionally, his hobbies included participation in the Findlay Military Vehicle Shows, D-Day Conneaut, airshows, and he enjoyed going to gun and knife shows. He also had a lifelong passion for tinkering, attending car shows, and automobile racing of all types.

Visitation will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024, until the time of Don's celebration of life and eulogy at 1 p.m. at Barndt Funeral Home, 121 W. South St., Wayne. Don's graveside service will follow immediately at Bradner Cemetery. Military honors will be performed by Wood County Military Detail.

Memorial contributions can be made in Don's name to Dress Right Dress Inc. of Seneca County which assists Service-Members and Veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
