Mary Fogarty Obituary

Mary was born a twin at Portland's old St. Vincent's Hospital to Tom and Catherine (Harmeier) Boylen. The girls grew up in the Laurelhurst district where they attended All Saint's Elementary School and St. Mary's Academy in downtown Portland. As a pair, Mary and her sister Kathleen welcomed their little sister Elizabeth as part of their team and later the three sisters cooperated in helping to raise their little brother John. The Boylen family enjoyed many years of winter skiing on Mt. Hood and summers on Puget Sound.
Mary and Michael Patrick Fogarty, an engineer at Bonneville Power, married in 1969 and together they raised two wonderful sons who continue Mary's legacy of gracious and loving generosity. Over the years, Mary, Mike and their sons traveled across the globe and instilled in their boys, curiosity and appreciation for cultural differences. As a result of a close family friendship, Rudy Leal was informally adopted as an adult third son.
Like many other children of that time, Mary was challenged by undiagnosed reading dyslexia. After getting her Masters in PE/Dance from Portland State University, this proved to be an asset. Mary became a favorite PE teacher at Geiser Middle School in Vancouver. Each year there was a scrum of boys wanting to take her PE class. Her students learned many dance styles and most of all teamwork. After Michael passed away in 2017, Mary moved to a new home on Hayden Island where a whole new community enjoyed her generosity, good humor and boundless enthusiasm. Mary is survived by her twin, Kathy (Scott) Frederick; sister, Beth Caswell of Bend; brother, John (Meg) Boylen of Bend; her two sons, Matthew (Shealin) and David; three nieces, two grandchildren and multiple great-grandchildren, plus generations of nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 15, at 1 p.m., at St. Andrews Catholic Church in NE Portland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to charities which serve the hungry and homeless.

Can say from the Heart that the days at SMA had more fun, more smiling, more pleasantries because those Boylen girls were in them ..... So nice to have known .....

I too remember her smile, good humor & friendliness through the years at SMA. My compassion to her family for their loss, and my good cheer to them for the years they enjoyed together with Mary.

I just happened to one of her students many years ago! Mrs. Fogarty always had a smile on her face, always was positive and really loved her job at Gaiser. I truly believe she was one of a kind! Sending my condolences to her family. I am so sorry for your loss.

My condolences to the passing of Mary, our dear loved one. I worked with Mary at Geiser Middle School. I remember Mary as a humble, lovable individual who genuinely cared for others. Her positive outlook on life influenced others to see the good in themselves. Mary will truly be missed by family and friends. May God bless your family.

Mary, although I have not seen her for many years I do remember her fondly. I remember her as always having a smile and always having a positive attitude and I think she's one of those people that made the world a little brighter and a little better. I'm glad I had the privilege to know her and to join her and dance. She really was a beautiful person.

Mary leaves a legacy of love, compassion and friendship. Mary inspired her students to explore and share expression through Dance. Mary was a wonderful friend and example of a live well lived. I was blessed to know Mary

Mary was well known in the local Belly Dance community as a consummate performer, stellar teacher and leader of Troup Kardeshlar. She was also in Troupe AL Ghawazee. Her specialties included dancing with a large brass tray on her head, drumming and colorful costuming. She will be sorely missed.
Mira, we love you and know you are dancing somewhere, delighting all who can watch. Dance on, my beautiful friend!!!
