Bernice Sperow Obituary

Bernice M. Sperow

Bernice Marian Sperow, 99, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria.

She was born Sept. 16, 1923, in Seneca County, to Edward and Marie (Wagner) Thom. She married Kenneth Sperow, who served in World War II, on Nov. 18, 1942, and he preceded her in death in 1991.

Bernice's survivors include her daughters, Diane Trevino (late Ines) of Tiffin, Sandra Scherger (late Gary) of Findlay, and Bonnie (Tom) Weimerskirch of Tiffin; 10 grandchildren, Lori (Brian) Williams, Amy Trevino, Barry Trevino, Beth (Christopher) Boehler, Jennifer (Roy) Haas, Daniel (Julie) Scherger, Angela (Tony) Konecny, Christopher (Alisha) Scherger, Abby (Brent) Pohlman, and Kari (Zach) Evans; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Carl Thom and Morris Thom; and sisters, Anna Louise Whitman and Phyllis Lee.

Everything that Bernice did was done well and it was done right. She graduated in the second class of Hopewell-Loudon High School. Bernice was a highly devoted mother and grandmother. Her time was largely dedicated to being a homemaker, in which nothing was out of place. One of her biggest loves was the art of cooking. She was cooking full holiday meals for three generations of family at every holiday until she was 94 years old. Her cooking was so exceptional that her beloved recipes were collected by her family and are still used today.

Bernice also had many other passions. She had a real talent for sewing and produced everything from pillows to First Communion dresses. She also ensured that the birds and squirrels that came to her back porch were cared for. Her landscaping and flowers were always well tended around her home.

In her free time, Bernice enjoyed putting puzzles together, camping around area State Parks, and vacationing to Florida. She was an Ohio State fan and enjoyed following Cleveland sports, especially the Cavaliers, Guardians, and Browns.

Funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Anthony Coci officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 30 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow next to her husband at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio, 44883, (419) 447-2424.
