Paul Thompson Obituary

Paul Lewis Thompson

Paul Lewis Thompson, 86, of Bloomville, passed away Thursday evening, Dec. 22, 2022, at his home surrounded by family.

He was born July 18, 1936, in Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania, to Joseph Warren and Gladys B. (Bixler) Thompson. He married the love of his life, Lenora Belle Day on Sept. 14, 1956, and she preceded him in death Nov. 30, 2022.

Paul's survivors include his son, Steven (Vicki) Thompson of Attica; daughter, Cindy (Dan) Zachman of Bloomville; six grandchildren, Clayton Thompson, Jason Thompson, Carson Thompson, Zachary Zachman, Joshua Zachman, and Chelsea Wilson; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 66 years, Lenora B. Thompson; son, Shawn Thompson; and brothers, Philip and Joseph Thompson.

Paul grew up in Oberlin, Pennsylvania, and moved to Attica when he was 15 years old and worked at the Attica Mill that his father owned. He fell in love with his future bride when he was 16 and she was 14. He joked that he saved her from being an Old Maid. He loved and adored her, following her to Heaven just three weeks after her passing.

He had a wonderful sense of humor that he maintained until the very end. He would get so tickled at his own jokes and stories and be in tears laughing before he could finish. He wrote silly poetry and gave them to family and friends and even had a few published in the newspaper. He claimed to be one of the originals that loved old country music, back when country wasn't cool.

He retired from Ohio Army National Guard in 1992 after 38-and-a-half years of service. He was proud and honored to have Tiffin National Guard Armory named after him after serving his military career there as a full-time clerk. He was First Sergeant "Top" to many, many soldiers who served under him over the years. He was loved and respected by his military family. He enjoyed visiting and sharing stories of his antics with them over the years.

Paul was a generous man, donating to Cherry Street Mission, Salvation Army, and American Red Cross. He was a member of Army National Guard Association and Am Vets Post 48.

He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and was a talented carpenter, building a home for his family in 1970 where he and Lenora remained.

Paul was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, fantastic father-in-law, and friend to many. He loved his grandchildren and became the biggest kid of all playing with them as they grew. He enjoyed fishing in Canada and Lake Erie with family and friends and getting together for family soup cook outs. He will be missed by many.

Paul's funeral will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio, 44883, (419) 447-2424 with Pastor Michael Padula officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bloomville, with military honors conducted by United Veterans Council of Seneca County.
