Frederick Smith Obituary

Frederick C. "Fritz" Smith

Frederick C. "Fritz" Smith Sr., 89, of Tiffin, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at The Willows at Tiffin.

He was born Dec. 20, 1934, in Tiffin, to Robert P. and Mary C. (Lucius) Smith. He married Mary Elizabeth Scholl on June 14, 1954.

Fritz's survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Smith of Tiffin; son, Fred (Susan) Smith Jr. of Tiffin; daughters, Frieda (Dean) Cooley of Tiffin, Elizabeth (Joel) Leslie of Morral, Andrea (Larry) Frankart of Republic, and Kelly (Mike) Smith of Toledo; daughter-in-law, Jean Smith of Portsmouth; brother, Joseph (Diane) Smith of Tiffin; sisters, Julie (John) Walter of Bascom and Janice Smith of Fostoria; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Matthew G. Smith; brothers, Robert Smith Jr. and Donald Smith; sisters, Peggy Barnes and Georgianne Smith; one great-grandchild; and one very special little boy to the Smith family, Aaron Good.

Fritz was a 1953 graduate of Tiffin Calvert High School. After high school, he served in U.S. Army from 1954-1956. He worked 30 years as a window clerk at the Tiffin Post Office and retired in 1996 after five years as a postmaster in Old Fort. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Fritz enjoyed a simple life, caring for the lawn, tending to his tomato plants, a stroll with one of the dogs or in later years, Sunday morning donuts at the homestead. Family was very important with holiday gatherings and all the children present. He enjoyed many bus trips and was always up for a day at the casino. He endured countless summers with the Tribe, giving up on them at least twice a week only to return sporting the chief on his cap.

He was a longtime CEO of the senior golf scramble at Clinton Heights and treasured the friendships and the banter with his buddies. Most importantly, he was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He lived with many of the same traditional values and traits of his own father and was an excellent example to his family.

Fritz's funeral will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio, 44883, (419) 447-2424, with the Rev. Anthony Coci officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military honors being conducted by United Veterans Council.

Visitation for friends and family will be 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or St. Joseph The Worker Fund.

The family would like to thank the Willows and Heartland Hospice for their kind care for the past few months.

Condolences may be sent and the guestbook signed at www.hgmackfuneralhome.com.
