Clarence Shiley Obituary

Clarence "Smokey" L. Shiley Jr.

Clarence "Smokey" L. Shiley Jr., 69, passed away after a short battle with cancer Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, at James Cancer Center, Columbus, surrounded by his closest family, his sister, Sharon, his son, Josh and his wife, Ashley, and his grandchildren, Lily and James.

Clarence was born Jan. 14, 1954, in Tiffin, to Clarence L. Shiley Sr. and Tarsa (Farrell) Shiley, who preceded him in death.

Clarence is survived by his son, Josh (Ashley) Shiley of Fredericksburg, Virginia; two grandchildren, Lily and James; and sister, Sharon (Scott Spangler) Roush of Nevada, Ohio.

A native of Burgoon, Smokey served his country in U.S. Navy. In a career that spanned over 25 years, he served numerous tours including assignments to four ships and two overseas stations. After travelling the world numerous times, he retired honorably at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Upon military retirement, he continued to serve his country another 18 years as a civil servant with U.S. Coast Guard.

He resided for many years in Chesapeake, Virginia, and recently returned to Ohio to be closer to family.

He will forever be remembered by those closest to him as "Chief" and "Papa."

A memorial service for Clarence will be announced at a later date.
