Vernon Gibson Obituary

Vernon J. Gibson Jr.

Vernon Jerome Gibson Jr., 98, of Tiffin, passed away peacefully in his sleep Monday, May 20, 2024, at his home.

Vernon was born Sept. 26, 1925, in Tiffin, to Vernon Sr. and Ada (Adams) Gibson. He graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School and joined U.S. Marines to see the world at 17 years old, where he was a tail gunner on a B-25 bomber.

Vernon worked as a traveling tree trimmer where he met and married his wife of 73 years, Violet "Leona" (Warren) on May 21, 1950, in Quincy, Illinois. He then took a job as a telephone lineman for Ohio Bell/AT&T, retiring after 37 years of service.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Leona; children, Brenda (Dan) Michalski of Waterville, Sherril (Jeff) Bayliss of Tiffin, Dale (Joyce) Gibson of Tiffin, Bruce Gibson of Littleton, Colorado, and Mike (Susan) Gibson of Tiffin; nine grandchildren, Jeff Bayliss Jr., Grant Michalski, Chad, Brant, and Bria (Stephens) Gibson, Craig and Joshua Gibson, and Christian and Evan Gibson; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a stillborn son; an infant brother; four sisters, Vivian Perry, Corrine Raudebaugh, Virginia Davis, and Ilo Broughton; and two brothers, Wayne and Richard Gibson.

Our dad was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He always made time to take us sledding, ice skating, and fishing. He loved being outdoors and took us and any neighborhood kids who wanted to go along to the woods walking, berry picking, or mushroom hunting, keeping us physically fit. He introduced us to the soothing sounds, smells, and calmness of nature. We were the only kids that we knew of that had a really cool tree house that he let everyone help build. He showed us by example how to give your child a wonderful learning childhood, something we are all grateful for. Love you Dad! Miss you! You will always be "Superman" to us!

There will no services for Vernon at this time.

I seen this the other day & knew right away even before the picture today that this had to be Vern. I worked out of Findlay for Ohio Bell but spent alot of time in Tiffin & i always enjoyed talking to Vern. One of the nicest guys i beleive i have ever known. I remember a day when we had to walk about a 1/2 mile back off the road to a hole on the toll route & everything had to be carried in by hand. Vern picked up a 2 inch water pump ( heavy ) & put it up on his shoulder & took off jogging back toward the hole. I could hardly beleive that. I told him we both could have carried it & he said he did it just cause he wanted to. He was strong, i seen him do many a things over the years. I know he prided himself for his age & the shape he was in ....that i know for sure. Good guy & glad to have known him. R. I. P. Vern
