Melvin Casler Obituary

Melvin F. Casler

Melvin F. "Mel" Casler, 92, of Tiffin, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, at The Courtyard East in Tiffin.

Melvin was born Sept. 22, 1931, in Big Stone City, South Dakota, to Howard Jay and Mary (VanErem) Casler.

He is survived by his children, Dawn Casler Reamer, Jay Casler, and Carah Casler. He is also survived by many students and faculty from Heidelberg College and special friend, Pam Faber.

Melvin had an exemplary career as an academic and was a professor to many in the Tiffin community and around the world. Mel was Professor Emeritus in the Math Department at Heidelberg University and maintained close ties with faculty and students over the years. He always said his greatest accomplishment was being part of a student's educational experience and watching students grow and become pillars of the community. He was a great man with a generous heart and spirit. His love for students and the Heidelberg community continued long after his retirement and his impact will be missed.

Melvin worked as a professor, an advisor of Kappa Psi Omega Sorority, and he was an Excelsior Men's Society Honorary Advisor at Heidelberg University. Melvin enjoyed sharing stories and his experiences with teaching while in China. Mel was an advanced SUDOKU enthusiast. He loved watching wrestling and sharing tales of growing up in his home town of Big Stone City, South Dakota. Melvin was passionate about Santa Claus paper cut outs that were specially ordered from China and framed. He distributed several hundred Santas every year to kids just to watch their faces light up with joy. Melvin was a Marine Corps veteran who served during the Korean conflict.

In accordance with Melvin's wishes, there will be no funeral at this time.

I will remember Mel Casler as a consummate teacher, mentor, and dedicated member of the Heidelberg community. This man had time for everyone. If Heidelberg had a "Mr. Chips" it was Professor Casler. He got me through college stats which was a major miracle. What a lovely man! He was a throwback to bygone days of one on one instruction tempered by tough love aided by the force of personality and genuine caring. His like is rarely seen these days. Frederick Collar x72 l

Mel was first my professor and later my mentor as I taught stats for several years at H'Berg. Most of all he was my friend and helped my husband and I look at countless houses in the area until we purchased the one we have lived in for over 30 years now. He had a wonderful and loving personality we will never forget.

Mr Casler was the best. There was never a time when he didn´t greet me with a big hug and immediately ask, so how´re the folks, kid?!? For Heidelberg Legacy families, Mel was a multigenerational presence. He was "Mr. Heidelberg" and we will miss him so.

Not sure he ever greeted me without that sly smile and had a story to tell. From my time at the ‘Berg to my Daughters time there, he left so many imprints on those who crossed paths with his intellect and charisma. A True Heidelberg Legend!

Mr Casler was one of a kind...the best. When my wife Holly (Graham), Jim Robson, and I had taken every math class offered and still had a semester left, he created a private Advanced Differential Equations class just for us at 7:00 AM. Early for most people, but he had been in the office 2 hours by then! He attended our wedding in Cleveland and always had time to visit when we came back to The Berg. Everyone is going to miss Mel!

What a loss! Mel was my advisor and kept me sane. Even drove out to Massachusetts for my wedding from Ohio. Helped my daughter out 30 years later. Dedicated an office in the science/math building in his honor. He was why I went to reunions. Just sent my Christmas letter to him a few weeks ago. Will always remember his grin.

Mr. Casler was a caring and excellent teacher; he made me believe that I could do math. His sage advice served me well in my teaching career. For more than forty years after I graduated from Heidelberg, I looked forward to our conversations; he always called me by name. I was fortunate to be able to tell him what he meant to me. As Heaven welcomes this truly special man, we reflect on all the memories he leaves us to cherish. Peace and prayers to all who loved him.

Mr. Casler was the best! I endured Calculus but walked away with a real fondness for him. He had a heart as big as his personality and as loud as his 8am voice. Prayers for his family and friends. Hope you know how much the Heidelberg community loves him.

Prayers of condolences to the family and friends of Mel. He was one of my favorite professors at the Berg. His stories of rollerskating in the Great Hall were true, I was in disbelief my sophomore year of his tales, and he bet me a beer. He came to an Ap event in his skates in the Great Hall and I loss the bet, literally skated curcles around me! He was always ready to greet the alumni, his Berg family, with a handshake, a hug and a smile and remembered alot of our names. I will miss that greeting so much, his stories and his smile. His kindness, zest for fun and helping out students from all over the world warmed my heart. God speed Mel. Your memory will live on.
