Herbert D. Uptagrafft

Herbert D. Uptagrafft Sr., 86, of Carey, passed away at 11:58 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, at Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay.

Herbert was born Feb. 4, 1937, in Pensacola, Florida, to Johnny W. and Maggie Mae (Stone) Uptagrafft. Hebert married Lillian Anderson on June 8, 1960, in Kentucky, and she preceded him in death June 12, 2016.

He is survived by his children, H. Dean Uptagrafft of Fostoria, Michael E. (the late Amber) Uptagrafft of Detroit, Michigan, and Marianne (Tim) Steward of New Castle, Indiana; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, John W. Uptagrafft; and brothers, Howard, LaVon, and Lamar Uptagrafft.

Herbert attended Lanier Senior High School (military school) in Macon, Georgia, where he graduated in 1957. He then joined U.S. Army as an engineer before transitioning to the role of chef. Herbert continued to serve as a chef until 1960 when he entered U.S. Army Reserves for a total of 22 years. Additionally, Herbert served in the National Guard. Herbert worked as a Machinist with Chrysler Corp. for 20 years before retiring in 1998.

Herbert continued his passion for cooking by opening the former Our Place Café in Carey with his wife, Lillian, and their son, John. In his earlier years, Herbert and Lillian enjoyed traveling, vacationing, and spending time with their grandchildren. Herbert loved watching crime shows, working in the yard, bird watching, and the company of his dog. He was a member of The Bright Road Church of Christ in Findlay and former member of Moose and Eagle Lodges in Fostoria and New Castle, Indiana.

Visitation will be 1-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, at MANN-HARE-HOENING FUNERAL HOME, 407 N. Countyline St., Fostoria, with Herbert's funeral at 3 p.m.

Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, at Byron Cemetery, Fairborn, with military honors.
