Cortland Heykoop
Cortland Nicholas Anthonie Heykoop, 91, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
A CPA by profession, he was foremost a loving and proud father and grandfather. "Dutch" or "Opie" to too many family members and friends to count.
Cortland was born June 18, 1931, in Boskoop, Netherlands. Cortland came to the United States in 1950 as a 19-year-old to work for his uncle, John Bos, in Clyde. He joined U.S. Armed Forces, 101st Airborne Div. from 1952-1954. He then became a U.S. citizen in Dec., 1954. During his time in service, he was stationed in Germany and spent many weekends home in the Netherlands where he began dating his future wife, Jeanne DeJong. They married Aug. 16, 1955, and together immigrated to the U.S. on Dec. 5, 1955. They resided in Tiffin for Cortland to attend Tiffin Univ. on the GI Bill.
He graduated with a BA from Tiffin University in Jan., 1958, and immediately went to work for Fruth & Co. located in Fostoria. Jeanne became an U.S. citizen in Sept., 1959. Cortland was an active member and Treasurer or President of many community organizations. Most notably they include The First Presbyterian Church of Fostoria, The Rotary Club, American Legion, Fostoria City School Board of Education, Fostoria Country Club, and Hilltop. He was a partner and owner of Fruth & Company, PLL, and served as Fostoria City Auditor.
He is survived by his daughters, Shirley (David) Heinlin of Upper Arlington, Carol (Keith) Burns of Delaware, Ohio, and Melinda (Phil) Spano of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Mallory Burns, Margot (Logan) Gould, Corstiaan Burns, Kees (Linda) Burns, Madeline (Brad) Heinlein, Anna (Corbin) Steinhaus, Cameron Heinlein, Sophia Spano, and Alexa Spano; and great-grandchildren, Hopkins and Hans Gould, their newborn baby brother, and Sienna Burns and Hudson Steinhaus.
Cortland was preceded in death by his parents, Arie Adrianus Heijkoop and Neeltje Bos Heijkoop; seven siblings; and loving wife of 66 years Jeanne DeJong Heykoop (1931-2021).
Dad shared so many lessons and if you knew him, you knew meat was done, people are finished, that every person marches to their own drummer, always remember to stop and smell the roses, it is better to that the path less trodden, and of course, five o'clock is drinkie poo time! He took great pride and joy in his roses, tulips, and yard for all to enjoy. He was well-loved and will be greatly missed.
Public visitation will be 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Hoening & Son Funeral Home, 133 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, Ohio, 44830. Cortland's funeral will be 12 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Robert Butcher presiding. Family burial will follow at Fountain Cemetery where military honors will be provided by United Veterans of Fostoria Honor Guard.
