Cheryl Mattingly Obituary

Cheryl Ann Masterson Mattingly, 76, passed away Saturday, September 20, 2025 at her daughter’s home in Loretto.  She was born October 22, 1948 in Marion County.  She worked as a Dietary Aide with the Loretto Motherhouse for 43 years.  She loved everyone and was a mom to many.  She will be remembered for her bright light, her smile, and her infectious laugh.  She was always there for those she loved and strangers alike as she walked the path of her faith without hesitation or question, being a guiding light and safe harbor for anyone in need of prayer, a hug, a laugh, or anything else within her power.  She touched so many lives and never asked for anything in return.  She truly led a Christ like life and will be deeply missed by her family, friends, co-workers, and church family.  She may have departed from this Earth but her imprint and impact on so many moral lives will continue to guide and comfort others for generations to come.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Alton “Big L.” Mattingly who died March 18, 2005; her parents, Richard Nolan Masterson, Sr. and Ruth Marie Cheshire Masterson; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Reynolds and infant Rebecca Masterson; one brother, Joseph Donald Masterson.

Survivors include her daughter, Stacy Ann Ballard (Darrel) of Loretto; her niece whom she raised, Melissa Lee (Chris) of Loretto; two granddaughters, Bethany Mattingly (Jacob Downs) and Autumn Ballard all of Loretto; one great grandson, William Lawrence Downs; four sisters, Denise Hagan (Richard) and Patricia Masterson, all of Loretto, Nola Ralston (Jim Pat) of New Hope, and Rosemary Smith (Eddie) of Culvertown; seven brothers, Dickie Masterson (Delores) and Jimmy Masterson (Carol), all of Louisville, Jackie Masterson (Mary Kay) of Vine Grove, Tom Masterson (Donna) of Samuels, Gerald Masterson (Pat) of Culvertown, Kenny Masterson of Bardstown, and David Masterson (Phyllis) of New Hope.

The funeral mass for Cheryl Ann Masterson Mattingly will be celebrated at 11 am Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the Loretto Motherhouse Church, 515 Nerinx Road, Nerinx.  Rev. James W. Graf will officiate.  Interment will follow in Saint Vincent de Paul Cemetery.

The visitation is 3-8 pm Tuesday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto, with a prayer service at 6 pm by Rev. Deacon Joseph R. Dant.

Pallbearers are Jaxon Hardin, Landon Hardin, Robbie Ralston, Toby Hagan, Mikael McCauley, and Jacob McCauley.
