Robert Donald "Bob" Abernathy, age 75, of Locust Grove, Georgia, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2025. He was born in Savannah, Georgia, to the late James Frank and Erleen Woods Abernathy. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Jim Abernathy.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Fran, children, Josh, Loren (daughter-in-law), Samantha and Chris (son-in-law), five grandchildren, sister-in-law, Barbara Abernathy, and nephews, Richard and Robert Abernathy.
Although "Bob" was his common nickname, close friends and family also knew him fondly as "Abby," "U.B.," or "Popz." A graduate from Jenkins High School in Savannah, Georgia, Bob dedicated 44 years of his life as a representative at CSX Intermodal. He also took great pride in completing the SCAD video program while simultaneously working full-time and raising a young family. He used this passion and skill for videography by taping every family event he could and volunteering to record anything needed for his church.
In addition to videography, Bob enjoyed spending his free time with family and friends fishing, playing his guitar, and writing songs. He was involved in many different music groups over the years and used his talents to minister to people of all ages. Every summer, Bob could be found with his family and closest friends in Big Canoe, Georgia, fishing and enjoying God's creation. He also had a special connection and love for all animals, especially dogs. In another life, he said, he would have worked with animals as a veterinarian or trainer.
Bob was heavily involved in church ministry for most of his adult life. He served at Bible Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, faithfully for many years as a deacon and part of the "parking lot crew"; additionally, he served at City Church in Griffin, Georgia, on the welcome team. Other organizations that he was passionate about included the Wounded Warrior Project, Baker's Pride, and Mrs. Wilkes (if you know, you know).
Those closest to him would describe Bob as having a quirky sense of humor that would light up any room he entered. Never believing anyone to be a stranger, he would be the first to break the ice with any comment that would bring a smile to someone's face and set the stage for exhibiting the joy he found through Jesus Christ. Though his earthly body brought him much pain, his spirit was one of continual positivity, focus, commitment, selflessness, and love. He had a deep concern for the people he cared about, and exhibited that in his everyday acts of service for others.
Bob's priorities were clear in his intentions, words, and actions: Jesus first, family second, and everything else after. His creative spirit often weaved in bits of wisdom from The Beatles or his colorful life experiences. He believed in trying something challenging at least once, keeping your word, showing up for what matters, and finishing what you started. Though he often downplayed himself, he continually uplifted Jesus for all who would listen. Those who heard his testimony and experienced the palpable shift of the Holy Spirit's transformation in his life could not help but be moved one step closer to Jesus. Bob shared his story of redemption to all who would listen, and ensured that his children knew Who changed his life for the better.
While Bob had much to be proud of during his life, he was clear that his greatest accomplishments were his children. He began with the end in mind. When asked how he persevered through the challenging moments of parenting, his response reflected this target: "I'm not raising my kids; I'm raising my grandkid's parents." This purpose influenced every choice he made, and ultimately is reflected in the legacy he left. His children and grandchildren believe, follow, and love Jesus Christ. In the end, nothing brought him greater joy.
A service to honor Bob's life will take place on Sunday, November 2, at 4:00 p.m. at City Church in Griffin, Georgia. Bobby Hanson will officiate the service. The family will receive friends before the service for a visitation from 2:30 until 3:30 at City Church.
